How would you like to get paid to eat out at restaurants, go to the movies, even go on vacation! Mystery shopping (often called secret shopping) is a billion dollar industry - and all you need to start cashing in is an internet connection!

There are almost 300 companies that pay people like you and me to evaluate a wide variety of businesses. My inbox is filled with secret shopping companies looking for people to shop at restaurants, hotels, cell phone stores, apartment complexes...I've even been asked to go on a cruise! (Unfortunately I had to pass that one up because of my day job).

How much will it cost to join?

Absolutely nothing - that's why we're called Free Mystery! True there are many companies on the internet that want to scam you for anything from $20 to $100 for this information, but that's not how we do business around here (I was taken by one of those scams, so I started this site to put the scammers out of business). Head over to the companies directory and you'll find nearly 300 businesses from all around the United States (and around the world) that want to pay you for your input, and won't charge a dime to sign up.

Why do companies employ Mystery Shoppers / Secret Shoppers?

1. Customer Service & Satisfaction - Big corporations and franchises spend huge amounts of money to maintain their image. If individual stores are not meeting their customer service expectations, they want to know so they can fix it. It's much less expensive to keep a customer than it is to find a new one!

2. Government Regulation - I often get requests for "Age-compliance Shops," which means that I need to try to buy tobacco or alcohol and see if the clerk requests identification. In many states and counties, companies can be fined if their employees do not verify I.D.

Is Mystery Shopping / Secret Shopping for me?

Mystery shopper companies look for people from all walks of life. If you have access to the internet and reliable transportation, can follow directions, and can write your reports descriptively using correct spelling and grammar, you are all set!

Some shops require digital pictures so that the client can see the condition of the facilities, and access to a scanner or fax is helpful so you can send your receipts in for reimbursement. The great thing is that if you don't have that technology now, you will be able to write off some or all of the purchase price as a tax deduction.

In fact as an independent contractor you will have access to a whole new world of tax deductions that aren't available to the typical wage-earner. Typical deductions for secret shoppers include vehicle expenses (or mileage) and the home office deduction.

Will I have control of when and where I shop?

Defintely! Some companies will email you with requests, but you are welcome to turn them down. Other companies have you visit their website and select shops you are interested in. Either way, you control your schedule. This is a great opportunity for stay-at-home moms, college students and others who need to a job with a flexible scheulde.
